Britain's Prince Harry has finally been given the go-ahead to begin the South Pole Allied Challenge.

The royal and his Walking With The Wounded teammates are flying into Novo air base in Antarctica this afternoon (22.11.13) following a 48-hour layover in Cape Town, South Africa, as they waited for the bad weather conditions to clear.

All three teams, formed of wounded servicemen and women from the UK, the US and the Commonwealth nations of Canada and Australia, will pitch their tents and begin the acclimatisation process before the 208-mile charity race begins.

The UK's Guy Disney, whose right leg was amputated below the knee after being hit by a rocket propelled grenade in Afghanistan in 2009, explained to Sky News: "Annoyingly we've been delayed for a couple of days, so it's been a case of packing and repacking our kit.

"It's been good to spend some time together. I think once we start racing it's going to be quite competitive and actually getting to know each other and understanding what everyone has gone through has been very important."

The trek is now scheduled to begin on November 30, with the winning team expected to reach the South Pole by mid-December.

Harry - who briefly served in Afghanistan - and his team are raising money for Walking With The Wounded charity and aim to prove that anything is possible post-injury.
