Prince Charles sent a letter of condolence to the owner of his favourite restaurant when it closed

Antonio Carluccio, 77, was left heartbroken when he had to close the doors of his beloved eatery on Neal Street in London in 2008 and says his customers, including the prince, were equally devastated.

He told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "It was heartbreaking. The customers were upset too.

"I even had a personal letter from Prince Charles commiserating the fact that the restaurant had to close."

Charles was such a fan of the restaurant he once celebrated his birthday there.

The Neal Street Restaurant was founded by Sir Terrance Conran in the early 1970s and Antonio and his wife Priscilla - the famed designer's younger sister - took over running the eatery in 1981, transforming it into one of the city's most successful restaurants.

The chef became outright owner in 1989 and counted Sir Elton John and Nicole Kidman among his other famous patrons, while TV star Jamie Oliver launched his career there.
