Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is knitting a red kangaroo for Prince William and Duchess Catherine's baby.
The 51-year-old politician has set about making the toy for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - who was known as Kate Middleton prior to her nuptials in April 2011 - for when their little one, who is due mid-July, arrives.
Speaking to Australian Women's Weekly, which is published tomorrow (26.06.13), Julia - who is known for her stance against sexism - said: "In terms of knitting for Kate Middleton's baby - I knit for babies - in part, they are the smaller projects, I've got not that much time in my life.
"I just thought that it would be a cute project to work on. I thought I would set myself the challenge of knitting a little stuffed toy, and why not a kangaroo?"
The kangaroo - the unofficial symbol of Australia - is one of many gifts the couple will receive when their baby is born and comes after the pregnant duchess was given a teddy bear by a member of the public in March, to which she responded: "Is this for our dau...."
Her comment sparked speculation the royal baby will be a girl because it sounded as if Catherine was about to say "daughter".
However, in different footage, Catherine is thought to have said: "Is this for us? Aw, thank you so much, it's very sweet of you."
