Prince Johan Friso

Prince Johan Friso

The family of late Dutch royal Prince Johan Friso have gathered at a memorial to celebrate his life.

Several stars including U2 frontman Bono, Desmond Tutu and Kofi Anan also paid their respects to the royal - who died in August following an 18-month stint in a coma after he was buried alive as a result of a skiing accident - at the service, which took place at the Oude Kerk church in Delft, south Holland on Saturday (02.11.13).

Holland's Princess Beatrix, Queen Maxima, Countess Zaria, King Willem-Alexander, Princess Mabel - the late prince's wife - were among the 900 people in attendance at the memorial.

Johan was buried on August 16 at his mother's castle in the village of Lage Vuursche and as a result he became the first Dutch royal for years to not be buried at the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft.

The prince's skiing accident occurred in February 2012 in Austria when he was struck down by an avalanche and buried for 15 minutes.

Despite making a slight improvement earlier this year, he suffered severe complications after being moved from hospital in London back to the Netherlands earlier this summer.
