Princess Eugenie's fiance is "not the most intelligent", his grandmother has joked.
Joanna Newton, 91, has spoken affectionately about her grandson Jack Brooksbank tying the knot with the 27-year-old princess, admitting she is "thrilled" about the news and cannot believe he is going to marry a member of the Royal Family later this year.
She told Mail Online: "It's amazing. I would never have thought it for a moment that it was going to happen and we are all very happy.
"I never thought he would get married to a royal."
She quipped: "He's a charming boy and all that but not the most intelligent and I would never have thought this would happen."
Joanna admitted her 31-year-old grandson and his wife-to-be are both "ordinary" people and insists her relative is a "good egg".
She added: "I just never thought it would go this far her being a member of the Royal Family. But Jack has always had lovely manners and has always been a good egg.
"I would call him ordinary, I wouldn't say there is anything special about him, he's a good-looking, nice chap and I think it says a lot about Eugenie that it's him she wants and it's lovely.
"I have just met her the once when I went up to London with them for lunch and she was just a very nice, ordinary girl, nothing pompous about her or even Royal about her."
Jack got down on one knee in Nicaragua earlier this month, and Eugenie has admitted his proposal was a "perfect moment".
She said: "The lake was so beautiful. The light was just a special light I had never seen. I actually said this is an incredible moment, and then he popped the question, which was really surprising even though we have been together seven years. I was over the moon. [It was a] complete surprise. But it was the perfect moment, we couldn't be happier."
Jack added: "It was love at first sight. I love Eugenie so much and we are just so happy and over the moon for what is to come."
