Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are decorating their nursery with African animal figurines.

The royal couple - who got engaged on a safari holiday in Kenya in 2010 - have been collecting upmarket designer Patrick Mavros' sterling silver figurines to display in their apartment in Kensington Palace as a present for their newborn son, Prince George.

Catherine, 31, has long been a fan of the jeweller, initially discovering his work when she worked for high street store Jigsaw prior to her engagement to Prince William, purchasing £70 crocodile earrings, £150 Ndoro earrings and a £250 Zozo elephant necklace.

The figurines range in price from £110 for a warthog to an elephant cow and four calves for sale at a whopping £4,700.

Patrick refused to comment on his royal customers, telling MailOnline: "We are lucky to have some great customers and we are always grateful for the support we have received from them."

Nevertheless, he did reveal which design he thinks would make a meaningful gift for a newborn baby.

He mused: "For a couple with a new baby? I imagine there would be a whole host of animals protective of their babies.

"But what I think would be the most appropriate gift would be a young elephant calf walking under the belly of its mother while a bull stands by. After all, it could become a herd one day."
