The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby could spark a £243 million spending spree.

The first child of the royal couple is due this month and companies will take advantage with souvenirs ranging from mugs and plates to t-shirts and doughnuts.

Prince William and Duchess Catherine will also give a boost to any baby product brand they are seen endorsing as fellow parents are expected to rush to copy their choices.

Retail specialist Bryan Roberts told the Daily Star: "There will be an uplift in those brands Kate and William buy."

While branded clothing and dishware is expected, doughnut company Krispy Kreme will be making royal treats with blue or pink icing depending on the sex of the baby.

St James's Palace have said they accept the "long and happy history" of memorabilia being produced to honour the child's birth.

A spokesman stated: "The birth of the Duke and Duchess's baby should be a joyous occasion.

"We recognise there is a long and happy history of people producing souvenirs to mark royal occasions."

Prince William's own birth saw a huge sale of commemorative items and experts have predicted similar scenes when the royal couple's first child is welcomed into the world.
