Duchess Catherine and Prince William

Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were the subject of an April Fool's joke today (01.04.14).

The royal couple were alleged to have decided to travel by humble bus during their impending visit to New Zealand next week "in keeping with their frugal, down-to-earth public image", according to coach firm InterCity's joke press release.

The company quoted "royal insider Mr. Harold Jest" as saying: "Wills and Kate expressed a desire to see New Zealand like the locals do. This way they'll be able to observe the lovely scenery from an elevated view and partake in some good old-fashioned banter with our Kiwi friends."

They also announced the bus was being pimped out with a state-of-the-art baby capsule for the couple's eight-month-old son Prince George, as well as plush Lazy-Boy recliners for his parents to travel in style.

In yet another tongue-in-cheek claim, InterCity Coachlines spokesperon "April Dupé" revealed Prince William, 31, and Duchess Catherine, 32, would be treated to a premium 'Kiwiana' experience.

She said: "William and Kate will be treated to a gourmet hangi lunch, and passengers won't miss out either - every one on board will receive a goody bag packed with delectable home-grown treats."

Meanwhile, famous Kiwi singer Lorde was reported to be climbing on board the bus for an intimate performance of her hit song 'Royals'.

The royal couple are preparing to head Down Under on April 7, where they will visit New Zealand and Australia in just 18 jam-packed days.
