The 65-year-old royal was greeted by members of the public waving flags as she arrived in Holsworthy, Devon, southwest England.

Addressing the crowd, she said: "It's a real pleasure to see this level of investment in a livestock market.

"I wish you all the best possible luck for the future and I look forward to hearing more about the market as time goes on."

Princess Anne was shown around by Kivells auctioneer James Morrish.

He added: "It's fantastic to have Her Royal Highness at Holsworthy and it's unbelievable to have her here at the market. The weather is great and the town is out in its finery."

Holsworthy's mayor John Allen was also on hand to celebrate the big day and saw it as a "real honour" to have Her Royal Highness open the market.

He told the North Devon Journal: "It's a tremendous day for Holsworthy blessed by beautiful weather. This visit will give the market a real boost and help give it the credibility it deserves as the UK's most modern livestock market. It's a real honour to have Her Royal Highness here to open it for us."
