A piece of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake has sold for $1,375.

''With best wishes from / Their Royal Highnesses / The Prince & Princess of Wales''

The small slice of sponge from the Royal Wedding of the heir apparent and the late Princess Diana in 1981 went on sale at the Nate D Sanders online auction and despite being mouldy, managed to fetch the huge sum.

The prized piece of cake was described by the auctioneers as being "housed in an original white and silver presentation box" with the Prince's feathers and ''CD'' monogram.

Inside the box - which is dated Buckingham Palace 29 July 1981 - there is also a small gift card reading ''With best wishes from / Their Royal Highnesses / The Prince & Princess of Wales'' on top of the baked good which is wrapped in wax paper.

Meanwhile, Princess Diana's engagement ring was recently reported to have increased over tenfold in value.

The 12-carat blue sapphire ring, which now belongs to her son Prince William's wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, is estimated to be worth a whopping £272,000 despite being bought by Charles for his then wife-to-be for just £28,000 in 1981.

The heirloom - which also boasts 14 diamonds encircling the sapphire - is worth three times more than the Queen's own engagement ring, which came in second place on a list of the world's top 20 most famous rings, ranked according to how much their value has increased.

Vashi Dominguez, the British jewelry expert who compiled the list, commented: "The Duchess of Cambridge's ring has appreciated more quickly than any other ring in the list.

'It's Kate's style icon status that makes the ring so special."
