Andy Murray was late for Prince William's first investiture ceremony yesterday (17.10.13) after having a drugs test.

The British tennis star was awarded with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) honour for his services to the sport by the royal at Buckingham Palace - but he nearly didn't make it in time after a routine drugs test hampered his preparations.

He said: "They turned up at my door at 8.20am and I had a taxi booked for half past eight. I was a bit worried I was going to be late.

"It's part of the job but when you have a day like today you are looking forward to, it's the last thing you need."

During the test, he wrote on Twitter: "In the middle of a drug test hahaha I'm goin to be late!!! (sic)"

Fortunately, Murray made it to the palace in time to collect his gong from William and the sportsman even managed to poke fun at the royal's handwriting during their one-minute chat.

The 26-year-old star said: "He asked me about my recent back surgery which I had a few weeks ago and how I was feeling after Wimbledon, was there a lot of pressure on me.

"I teased him a bit as he had sent me a note to me before Wimbledon wishing me luck and his wife had written me a letter afterwards.

"Her handwriting was beautiful and I told him how fantastic it was compared to his.

"I have met him a few times before and he has always been very easy-going. He seemed very relaxed today."
