Prince Philip shook the hands of the doctors and nurses who had turned out to see him off, and told staff to 'behave themselves'.
The royal left in the passenger seat of a Range Rover, and waved good-naturedly at everyone who had gathered there.
Senior staff nurse Denise Webster, who was amongst those who had turned up to say goodbye, said: "The Duke was a very good patient, and as he left the hospital he told staff to behave themselves and he said he was going back to enjoy the rest of his holiday."
Prince Philip is expected to return to Balmoral, in Scotland, to finish his holiday with the Queen.
However, it remains to be seen whether Prince Philip will be able to accompany the Queen to the opening of the London 2012 Paralympic Games on 29th August. The ceremony is supposed to be his next official engagement.
