Vitamin D deficiency in adults has been well documented in the media, but now The Department of Health warns babies and pre-schoolers are most at risk of being deficient.
The Canadian Paediatric Society and the American Academy of Paediatrics recommends that breastfed infants receive a daily dose of 400 IU vitamin D supplementation.
The Department of Health now recognises the risk of vitamin D deficiency amongst the UK population.
In a statement issued to healthcare professionals earlier this month, Dr Alison Tedstone from the Health & Wellbeing Division at the Department of Health, said: “We are aware that some of the UK population may be at risk of vitamin D deficiency.
“This is a concern, particularly for at-risk groups, such as pregnant women, infants and young children."
I breastfeed, so why does my baby need a Vitamin D supplement?
Choosing to breastfeed your baby is an important decision. Breast milk is the perfect source of nutrients because it is composed of the right amounts and appropriate types of fat, carbohydrates and proteins that infants require.
However, just as it is difficult for adults to obtain their vitamin D from food alone, breastfed babies also need to obtain their vitamin D from a combination of the sun, food and supplements.
Why supplement with vitamin D?
Babies need vitamin D for healthy growth and development. In particular, bones require vitamin D to help with the absorption of calcium. Bones and teeth need certain minerals like calcium and phosphorous and vitamin D helps growing bones absorb these minerals.
Did you know?
- Recent studies show that more vitamin D or sunshine during infancy can help reduce the risk of major health concerns later on in life
- Breast milk, on average, contains only 10% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin D.
- When a mother has low vitamin D levels, her breast milk will in turn, contain low levels of Vitamin D.
- The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends a vitamin D supplement from birth onwards.
