With a new baby around, it can be tricky to know where to start with getting back into shape post-pregnancy. After all, most new mums are far too sleep-deprived to even consider hitting the gym.

It’s important to remember that it’s taken nine months to gain your pregnancy weight, and so working back to your pre-pregnancy body may require a little patience – this really isn’t something to be rushed and you definitely shouldn’t consider doing any exercise for at least six weeks after the birth.

You’ve done a fantastic job of nourishing and caring for your baby throughout your pregnancy, so now your little bundle of joy has arrived it’s time to take it easy and enjoy the journey.

We all know it can be tricky to find time for yourself amongst all the nappy changes, feeds and sleeping routines, so together with our parenting experts at Britax, we have pulled together our top hints and tips to help you back on track to pre-pregnancy you.

1. Try to take a walk each day with your baby in their pushchair – this gentle exercise is perfect to help to increase your circulation, build on your general fitness and ease you back into a fitness routine. Plus, the fresh air will do wonders for your mental wellbeing.

2. Kegel exercises are great for strengthening your pelvic floor muscles post-pregnancy and what’s more, they can be done from the comfort of your own home.

3. Join an exercise group – it’s a great way to meet new mums in your area and will also help to keep you motivated.

4. Remember to make time for yourself, even if it’s just a quarter of an hour to have a nice relaxing bath or read a magazine.

5. If you are breastfeeding, remember to exercise after feeding your baby to ensure you aren’t uncomfortable. A nursing bra may also help to provide extra support.

6. Choose low-fat, high fibre foods to ensure your body is receiving the right nutrients, whilst also keeping your fat intake down. Choose fresh fruit over biscuits for a healthy snack mid-afternoon.

7. Continue the fight against stretch marks by massaging your stomach, thighs and hips daily with moisturising cream.

8. If you’re looking for ways to get out and active with baby, make sure you also check out Britax's brand new range of BOB sporty outdoor strollers, which will be available in the UK from December 2012.
