Many parents are now choosing a designated photographer and school sports day to avoid an influx of flashing cameras from eager parents.
Sports day was recently voted one of the most stressful occasions to take photos at so we’ve got some great tips so that you can capture the moment your child crosses the finish line perfectly.
Simon Iddon, product manager for the Nikon 1, has given us some great tips for capturing all the best parts of your child’s sports day.
How to Capture the Perfect Shot
1) If you are looking to capture a split second moment, kit yourself out with a fast camera that can take several images with just one click of a button to help make sure you get the exact shot you want. Some cameras go even further than this and help suggest which frame got precisely the right moment – they do the selection for you.
2) If you want to take the pressure off a bit, switch the scene selector to auto. Most decent compact cameras will offer this. It means that the camera controls most picture settings for you, automatically adjusting the camera for situations such as portraits, landscapes, night portraits, and close-ups.
3) Try to pre-compose your shot as much as possible. If you are at a sports day, head to the finishing line before the race starts and work out what angle is going to be best to capture your child’s sporting achievement.
4) Zoom out to get as much of the scene into your shot as possible – as long as the picture is taken in high resolution, best quality format, you can crop your image later to frame the exact moment you want. Taking a wide shot to start with increases your chances of capturing something unexpected that happens spontaneously.
5) Get creative and shoot some movies – it will give you a different dynamic. With some high quality cameras, such as those in the Nikon 1 range, you can take full resolution still images at the same time as shooting a film, so you’ll get double the chance to record that special moment!
