If you’ve been watching Britain’s Got Talent over the last few years then you’ll have seen that street dance acts are taking over.
This is just one of the reasons why children now consider street dance to be the coolest skill they can learn.
Over half of 6-11 year olds said that it would be the coolest skill to impress with, followed by skateboarding, with free running coming third.
Traditional skills such as hopscotch and skipping have been left at the bottom of the pile in favour of these new, cool, skills.
Kids have said that they learn about new skills via films, TV and the internet, with a few saying they rely on teachers and parents to keep they up to date with the latest skill trend.
Sadly, although most parents want their children to be active, 88 per cent say they can’t afford to pay for their children to learn new skills out of school.
Helen Gorman, Brand Director for Robinsons Fruit Shoot, said, “Our research suggests that programmes like Britain’s Got Talent and Got to Dance are changing the way kids want to play.
“Traditional games like hopscotch and skipping aren’t seen as ‘cool’ by kids when compared to street dance and free running. The challenge for parents is helping to keep kids up to date with the new breed of skills they want to learn.”
Fruit Shoot has launched its new Get Your Skills On campaign in order to help children learn new skills for free.
This involves regional tours for the Fruit Shoot Skills Crew who will teach children new skills for free.
Peter Andre is in support of the campaign and said, “My kids are always coming back from school talking about the latest new trick their friends have shown them or a video they’ve seen on online so it’s great that kids are being given the chance to learn from the Fruit Shoot Skills Crew as part of Get Your Skills On!”
Getting your kids to learn a new skill could impact positively on their behaviour, and research shows that kids said they feel happier and more confident when learning a new skill.
It could also work well for your child in the long-term as 50 per cent of kids said that they would like to become famous for their skill.
