Kids are very demanding. When they’ve been living with you for 20 years or so, they become your whole world. So when they finally leave the nest, you and your partner can be left on a bit of a limb. Here we’ve put together some tips to help you get your life back on the right track.
Spend more time with friends
Once your kids have become independent, you’ll find that you’ll have far more time on your hands. Why not make the most of that time by seeing some friends? You could invite them to dinner or even go on holiday with them – and you won’t have to worry about babysitting.
Organise weekends away
If you’re both working full time, why not try organising some weekends away? There are plenty places to visit in Britain and booking last minute could save you some extra pennies too.
The key is to keep yourself focused on doing something instead of wondering what to do with yourself, so make sure your weekend away is packed with activities and sightseeing!
Find a new hobby
Although your kids leaving home can be an emotional time, one of the advantages is that you have more time to follow the things that you’re interested in. No matter what you enjoy doing, you’ll be able to dedicate as much time as you like to it.
Why not try a new sport too? With the legacy from the Olympics last year sports centres are thriving with new equipment and more members, so try taking a friend or your partner to give it a go. Not only will you be using your spare time wisely but your health will benefit too.
Visit your kids
If you’re missing your family too much, the best way to use your free time is to go and visit them. Whether they’re settled down or simply at university, taking the time to go and say hello will make them seem less far away. Your kids will probably appreciate it too, even if they don’t say so to your face.
