Discount website www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk polled 1,196 expectant parents aged 18 and over across the UK, and found that 54 per cent would be open to choosing their baby’s gender rather than being surprised by either a son or daughter.

Two fifths of the respondents that admitted they would like to choose the sex of their baby, admitted feeling that way so they could have at least ‘one of each’ whilst one in ten claimed it will allow them to ‘save money’ on clothes and toys.

A quarter claimed ‘personal preference’ whilst just under a fifth confessed they wanted to ‘avoid’ disappointment.

Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, said: “There are procedures that you can use to choose the sex of your baby, but at present, the practise of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is only legal abroad.”

Furthermore, 58 per cent of the respondents would go as far as constructing their baby’s appearance by choosing an eye colour, hair colour, nose shape, adult height and skin tone for the little one, before he or she is born.

When the respondents were asked if they wanted to know the sex of the baby they were currently expecting, 37 per cent of those under 20 weeks through said they would, whilst more than half who’ve had the dating scan said they have already found out.

Mark added: “Whilst it appears many people would like to be able to choose their baby’s sex and features, only those willing to ignore the ethical issues and willing to pay a lot of money are able to, at present.”
