In a nationwide survey, to celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release of the comedy film about impending parenthood, What To Expect When You’re Expecting on October 22, 45 per cent of mothers admitted that something happened to them during pregnancy that they just weren’t expecting.
Star of the film and mum of twins Jennifer Lopez revealed that she wasn’t ready for parts of her body (other than her tummy) to start growing… “Your nose gets big, huge. Everybody’s nose blows up and it’s the weirdest thing. And your feet too. I thought, “What am I going to do with all these great shoes?” But they do go back, almost.”
Singer, busy mum and ambassador for Sparks (a charity funding research into conditions affecting the health of babies, children and mums-to-be) Spice Girl Melanie C confessed: “I didn't expect to get so much attention - I felt really special when I was pregnant, everybody is so nice to you. I wasn't quite prepared for all the tummy touching either, but I enjoyed it! Such a special time.”
And what about a Dad? Professional rugby player Kenny Logan and husband to TV Presenter Gabby Logan confirmed that he really hadn’t been expecting quite so many sleepless nights but said ‘that it was worth it’ Aaaah!
Lots of mothers it seems were unprepared for the size they would grow to, how uncomfortable, tired or breathless they would feel or the endless minor conditions they would experience or be tested for. But more unusual answers for what mums didn’t expect when expecting included:
- The need to eat fresh plaster off the wall
- The inability to be in the same room as a vegetable
- Cravings for ice, garden peas, Kit-Kats and parsley
- A loss of body hair except on the tummy which went furry like a peach
- Flatulence
- An increased sex drive
And a small amount of mothers probably got the biggest surprise if they genuinely weren’t expecting it, with 1.4 per cent giving birth to twins unexpectedly.
