For many women, hair is intimately tied to confidence and self-esteem. Styling your hair before a night out or a special event is a must for most of us, and having healthy tresses is often perceived as a sign of youth and vitality. However, the female body has a complex system of hormones that fluctuate and change all the time – especially during pregnancy

What Is Pregnancy Hair Loss?

Hair changes in pregnancy are common; every woman is unique and therefore so is our hair. It can be quite common to experience hair shedding or hair loss before pregnancy, during pregnancy, and postpartum while you are breastfeeding. Regardless of the time you may experience hair loss, it is important to maintain a balanced diet throughout to regulate hormones and encourage healthy hair regrowth.

A couple of months after birth, you may start to notice signs of shedding this extra hair that you have kept whilst pregnant because of postpartum hormonal changes. This is perfectly normal and should not be anything to worry about.

Your body will naturally over time, regain its normal hormone levels. If you think you are shedding more than normal and for a longer period, or it’s causing distress, then you may be lacking in a few nutrients that play a key role in the health of your hair. The nutrient deficiencies can be addressed with supplements to ensure a healthier body and stronger hair. If hair loss is experienced in the postpartum period, most women will experience a full recovery, although the process may be slow.

How Can Supplements Combat Pregnancy Hair Loss?

To support the body, care for overall health and improve the condition of your skin and hair, supplementation may be necessary. There are several ways supplements can help to combat hair loss – here are my top two must have supplements to keep hair healthy pre and post pregnancy

1.       Gingko Bilboa

This extract is hugely beneficial as it increases blood flow to the scalp, delivering a rich supply of nutrients to the hair follicles to promote hair growth and nourish the scalp. Ginkgo has such valuable properties; it is an anti-inflammatory, meaning it works hard to heal inflamed scalp cells and damaged hair follicles. Plus, its antioxidant qualities provide real protection against harsh toxins that attack hair and skin.

While taken in conjunction with a balanced diet, the combination of Ginko Bilboa and Vitamin B Complex will work to:

·         Support healthy hair & skin

·         Reduces stress-related hair loss

·         Maintains healthy circulation

·         Improves brain function & energy levels

·         Anti-ageing properties to target age related hair loss

·         Reduces anxiety & depression

·         Supports vision & eye health

·         Improve gut health & digestion

·         Support a healthy immune system

2.       Biotin

Biotin (or Vitamin B7) is valued for its ability to promote strong, healthy hair and clear, youthful skin. You may find that after having a baby, you need a bit of a confidence boost to feel like yourself again.

Biotin is necessary for the creation of fatty acids, which are necessary for good skin, health, and hair. Biotin is a B vitamin that is necessary for healthy, thick hair as well as maintaining normal physical functions. B vitamins help to strengthen hair follicles, reduce scalp irritation, and increase blood flow to the scalp, all of which help to rejuvenate hair.

While taken in conjunction with a balanced diet, biotin will work to:

·         Support healthy hair & skin to maintain peak condition

·         Aid Stronger & shinier hair

·         Promote a healthy immune system

·         Support metabolic function

·         Improve brain function

·         Supports friendly bacteria levels for improved digestion

Whether you are pregnant or have just had a baby, you want to look your best with a limited amount of time on your hands.

Your body is doing something amazing, so it needs to be as strong and healthy as possible so it can take care of you and your little one. Supplement plans will not only work to improve hair health and reveal glowing skin but with the right selection of vitamins, they will work to increase energy levels; something that can often be lacking with a newborn!
