Mum of two, Rachel Allen, knows what works for kids when it comes to food

Getting the kids to eat can at times be a challenging task. Fear not, cooking connoisseur and author Rachel Allen has teamed up with Kerrygold to produce a free Kerrygold Recip-e-book and has some great advice on how to get your children to enjoy their food

Rachel Allen’s top five tips for fussy eaters

"Eat as a family where everyone eats the same food sitting around the table together as much as is possible"

1. Get them involved: Take your children shopping with you. Choose a time when you're not in a rush when you can ask them what they would like to eat or what they would like you to cook for them. Take the time to write their ideas & suggestions down.

2. Portion well: I always find that my children eat much better when they are not presented with a plate absolutely full of food. If there's too much on the plate it can seem intimidating and you immediately have a battle on your hands.

3. Quality food and family time: Try and give your children the best quality food possible from the moment they start eating. Eat as a family where everyone eats the same food sitting around the table together as much as is possible.

4. Be adventurous: I have often found a great way to get fruit and vegetables into my children is to cut up pieces of raw veggies or fruit and arrange them (it often helps with little ones to make a funny face or something similar) on a plate to snack on in-between meals while they're playing or watching television.

5. Take it back to the roots: It's hugely important to show children where food comes from so make a point of taking even as little as half an hour to plant a seed (a window box will suffice if you don't have a garden), which your child can watch as it grows. Something such as an herb like parsley or thyme which he or she can use in cooking with you.

Also a chair pushed up to the counter while you're cooking will allow your child to take part in the cooking preparation.
