Brit kids love going back to school!

As children in the UK go back to school for the new academic year, The Walt Disney Company today announce the findings of research which reveals the feelings of both children and parents  as the summer break draws to a close.

The research, which surveyed 1,700 British parents, shows that, contrary to popular perceptions about back to school blues, over a third of UK youngsters (35 per cent) are excited about heading back to the classroom!

For some children, however, as they grow older nearly a quarter (24 per cent) are worried about exams or peer pressure, but almost a third (30 per cent) are excited because they feel they are growing up. After catching up with friends (83 per cent), and looking forward to moving up a year (44 per cent), a fifth of children in the UK most look forward to a new lunchbox and pencil case when going back to school.

Parents too are preparing themselves for the back to school adjustment as the summer holidays draw to a close. Because parents have spent such a significant amount time with their children throughout the summer holidays, once their children are packed off for their first day of the new academic year, nearly a quarter (23 per cent) experience a sense of loss.

Conversely, over a quarter of mums and dads (26 per cent) feel relieved as they have more time to themselves, with 24 per cent welcoming the return to a normal routine at the end of thesummer holidays.

Over 40 per cent of parents in the UK have an enormous sense of pride when their kids go back to school. 30 per cent are most proud of helping their children become more responsible by making sure they get up on time, have breakfast and are ready for the day whilst inspiring their children to think freely through helping them with their homework is important to a quarter, according to Disney’s research.

Family psychologist Corinne Sweet highlights the mixed feelings many parents go through: "Disney’s research brings to light the interesting set of contradictory emotions we have all experienced as parents when our kids go back to school.

"On the one hand we are excited as we pack them off on the first day, but also relieved that we have some more time to ourselves as the summer break can be exhausting!"
