Gold medal winners have enthused a generation of parents to name their offspring after these inspirational podium-place heroes, according to research by Cussons Mum & Me, following the announcement of this year’s most popular baby names.

"At Cussons Mum & Me we understand that mothers can be inspired by many things in life and it is great to see our athletes having such a positive effect on the nation.”

Jessica Ennis takes top spot on the list, with 40 per cent of people surveyed saying if they were to name their baby after an Olympian, it would be her. She has already had a baby named after her just twenty minutes before she took gold in the heptathlon. The next two spots go to our cycling legends Victoria Pendleton (12 per cent) and Chris Hoy (10 per cent). This could mean Britain is set for a flood of cycling stars if research that your name has an effect on your life choices and career is to be believed.

A spokesperson from Cussons Mum & Me said: “Gone are the days when pop stars and film icons dominated the baby name race. Amelia and Harry might be in pole position for 2012, but watch this space for Jessica, Chris, Victoria and many others, as Olympians will take the gold spot for names in 2013.

"At Cussons Mum & Me we understand that mothers can be inspired by many things in life and it is great to see our athletes having such a positive effect on the nation.”

2. Victoria - after Victoria Pendleton’s cycling wins

3. Chris - after Chris Hoy was crowned Britain’s greatest Olympian of all time

4. Zara - after Zara Phillips’ regal win in the equestrian events

5. Tom - after Tom Daley’s bronze for diving
