A speedy recovery and squeezing back into your old favourite jeans with ease would be a dream come true for most new mums. Now, that dream can become reality thanks to a new “belly-wrapping and massage programme.”
Mari Ryalen, expert massage therapist, stumbled across the unique binding and massage solution when she travelled the world to study ancient Mayan and Indonesian practices. The programme is perfect for the post natal period.
Ryalen identified that the ways in which we deal with the after affects of childbirth are similar to other countries. “We can learn a lot from their simple yet amazingly effective methods, which not only improve a woman’s health but also allow her to regain her pre-pregnancy shape – or even better – and fitness level remarkably quickly.”
Now she is launching a new condensed 8-day programme for women who have just given birth. The unique programme combines Mayan abdominal massage and Indonesian massage with the Bengkung Wrapping method Ryalen studied in Singapore to create a system that can dramatically shrink the size of the abdomen in the weeks following childbirth – in a healthy and natural way practiced for centuries.
Ryalen explained: “The treatment is done just after childbirth – at a time when a woman can’t exercise. The binding supports the back and helps the woman’s abdominal wall be in a place where she can effectively use her muscles to exercise to good effect when she is ready.”
As well as a vastly improved figure the main benefit of the process is that it encourages a healthy recovery.
Relaxin hormone surges through a woman’s body during pregnancy and delivery, allowing the body to adjust to the physical changes and expansion necessary for the child bearing process. These hormones stay in the body for three months after delivery, leaving women’s bones, muscles and body tissue soft or malleable. Women in some countries take advantage of this post-pregnancy time to create hour-glass figures they didn’t have before – reminiscent of corsets worn by European aristocracy in the eighteenth century that changed the bodies shape through continual use.
The daily massage that comes with the binding is key to the treatment’s efficiency. “The massage combats water retention throughout the body and also relieves any stagnation - both systemic and in the shrinking uterus. It also alleviates muscle tension, aches and pains.
My clients find that the two together – belly-wrapping and massage – lead to a marked difference in their shapes very quickly;” said Ryalen.
Even women who have not been pregnant can benefit tremendously from abdominal massage, according to Ryalen. “If your diaphragm is tight, it presses on the main artery and vein going to the heart – you can end up with thirty percent less blood circulating in the lower part of your body, decreased circulation and impaired digestion. A tight stomach causes congestion – you need circulation to get good flow and nutrient exchange. You can physically massage out constipation. Good massage can be critical to a good digestive system.”
