West Midlands Police could be at risk

West Midlands Police are now on a high alert and have had to implement "additional security measures" after receiving the threat anonymously.

Sky News says that the information passed to the force involved a plan to kidnap and kill a policeman whilst they're on duty in Birmingham.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson refused to comment on the report, stating that they were "still accessing the information and cannot go into specifics."

The threat level to police officers across Britain was raised to substantial in October, whilst the national security level still remains at severe - meaning a terrorist attack is highly likely.

Held back to give a security reminder yesterday, the force added in a statement that the information passed to the police is now being assessed.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Forsyth also said that there's nothing at this stage of the inquiry to suggest members of the public are at an increased risk.

"West Midlands Police treat all information relating to matters of security extremely seriously.

"In this particular case we have received information relating to the safety of West Midlands Police officers and police staff. There is nothing at this time to suggest there is an increased risk to members of the public.

"We have taken the opportunity to remind all employees of the need to be vigilant. Our priority remains serving our communities and protecting them from harm. Officers remain on patrol and our staff continue to respond to calls for service as usual."

The force did however refuse to reveal just how the information about the threat had come to them, saying only that officers continue to patrol the street and it was "business as usual".
