The Royal British Legion has teamed up with Marks & Spencer to encourage the nation to take part in ‘LIGHTS OUT’, a campaign to remember the soldiers who fell during the First World War.

The Royal British Legion Charity Candle

The Legion is inviting the nation to take part in a moment of reflection, by switching off their lights and illuminating their homes with a single candle between 10pm and 11pm on 4th August.

This signifies the date Britain entered the Great War 100 years ago, and the time the news was broadcast. Volunteers from the Legion are also organising hundreds of local remembrance events taking place across the country to mark the date.

‘LIGHTS OUT’ has been inspired by wartime Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey, who famously remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time”.

The candles are available at Marks & Spencer or on the website for £4.00.
