New figures released today by Cancer Research UK's Dryathlon have shown that a quarter of young Brits who had an alcoholic drink at the airport before their holiday started pre-midday, with 26% of those who did drink at the airport downing three or more alcoholic beverages before takeoff.
The stats come from a survey of 2,000 adults who were asked about their summer holiday drinking habits.
Once arriving at their destination, almost a quarter (24%) who went on holiday in the last year said they'd have three or four alcoholic drinks on an average day whilst away, with the figure rising to 28% for young Brits. Amongst the younger age group, 10% had their earliest drink between 9am and midday with a further 6% averaging nine or ten drinks a day whilst away.
Drinking in excess sometimes leads to embarrassment when away, with more than one in ten (12%) of Brits who have been on holiday admitting they've felt embarrassed about their behaviour after enjoying the tipple, with 12% confessing bad dancing and 18% admitting a cheeky kiss with a stranger.
The Dryathlon campaign offers a new twist this year, with people given the opportunity to try the challenge in September as well as January.
Director of marketing at Cancer Research UK Anthony Newman said: "We all love a good summer holiday and we can tend to indulge a little too much when we're away; whether it's having a beer by the pool before midday or trying out the entire cocktail menu in one sitting. Taking part in Dryathlon is the ideal way to say goodbye to summer overindulgences and kick off a healthy September. You could save some money and even drop a few post holiday pounds, all whilst raising money to beat cancer!"
Dryathlon runs from September 1 to September 30 with registrations open now at dryathlon.org. Since its launch in 2013, 140,000 Dryathletes have raised £15 million for Cancer Research UK.
