Following Manchester United's victory against Club Brugge on Wednesday night, fifty-seven fans were arrested when brawls broke out at a bar.
Supporters were reportedly celebrating their team's convincing 4-0 win, when they were attacked by Belgian "hooligans" outside a pub in the city centre. Dirk van Nuffel, Chief Constable of Bruges Police, said that although there was no major damage, bottles and chairs were thrown in the clash.
"Police forces were present quickly and made 32 arrests of Englishmen and six Belgians. They were all registered and then released. We have the identities of all the people involved. We will pass those identities to the British police and they will decide whether to charge them," he told BBC News.
An additional 25 travelling fans were also arrested for not having tickets to the match, in which Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick, but they were released shortly afterwards.
Despite the skirmish, van Nuffel stated that he was "satisfied" with the English supporters' behaviour: "My general impression of the Manchester United fans was very good, especially the ones at the match."
United's 4-0 win at the Jan Breydel Stadium will send them through to the Champions League group stages.
