On Thursday, British and French ministers are to sign an agreement focused on improving security at the French port of Calais, where thousands of migrants regularly attempt to cross the Channel. Since June, nine people are known to have died making this crossing.

Migration, both legal and illegal, has surged throughout Europe, with border agency Frontex reporting a record high last month of 107,500 migrants at EU borders.

The prime minister has acknowledged that many people are economic migrants coming to Europe in search of a better life, but has emphasised his determination to secure the border. "What we can't do is allow people to break into our country," he said on the Today programme.

The new agreement builds on previous talks which led to various improved security measures, including additional CCTV cameras, floodlights, infra-red detectors, fencing and personnel. The deal will also incorporate measures to deal with the human traffickers facilitating illegal crossings, and commitments to increase humanitarian support for vulnerable migrants.
