In light of Britain's gun laws recently coming under criticism, Sky News has published a Q&A which helps clear up some details regarding owning a firearm.
One of the main details that was highlighted, was that anyone can own a gun, granted they have the correct gun licence and comply with the regulations in order to get a licence. This can be done by applying to your local police force.
There are two main types of gun certificates. One is a Firearm Certificate and the other is a Shotgun Certificate. Under Britain's laws, there are only two reasons someone can qualify for these certificates. One reason is for shooting at targets (i.e. at a gun club), while the other is for hunting. If you are applying for hunting purposes, then you also have to have an appropriate area to shoot, which an official firearms expert will determine by inspection.
Keeping your firearm at home also comes with particular conditions. The gun has to be kept under lock and key while the ammunition has to be locked away separately.
Finally, any signs of a criminal background will severely hamper your chances of getting a licence and if you have spent at least three years in prison, you are forever banned from having a licence.
