Their bodies were found yesterday near Santa Barbara

Several people have been arrested by the Honduran police in connection with the deaths of beauty queen Maria Jose Alvarado, 19 and her sister Sofia, 23.

The bodies of the sisters were found on Wednesday alongside a river just outside the north western town of Santa Barbara- almost a week after they disappeared following a party.

The sisters’ last sighting was when they left a resort after they celebrated Sofia’s boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz’s birthday. Police believe that Ruiz shot Sofia out of jealousy after he saw here dancing with another man. He then shot Maria after she tried to escape.

Ruiz was arrested over the murders along with another man, who police believe helped him dispose of the bodies. The police have also arrested the owners of the resort as this as the last place that the girls were seen.

Maria Jose Alvarado was given the crown for Miss Honduras World in April of this year and was due to fly to London on Thursday to continue her journey in the Miss World Pageant.

The United Nations have revealed that Honduras is the world’s highest murder rate, backed up by the statistics that 90 murders are committed for every 100,000 people.

This is more so in women and girls, which rose by 263 per cent between 2005 and 2013.
