John Brown was arrested by police on 28 March for making monkey gestures directed at Cowdenbeath's Kudus Oyenuga as he celebrated a goal.

The 25-year-old from Motherwell committed a second offence in October, when he shouted and swore at Falkirk fans in the stadium's disabled section.

Brown pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court, and was ordered to perform 70 hours of unpaid work on top of the 12-month ban.

"Brown's behaviour was utterly reprehensible and choosing to vent this kind of hateful abuse at football matches is no excuse at all," said Stephen Ferguson, football liaison prosecutor for the west of Scotland.

"There is absolutely no place in modern Scotland for individuals who commit crimes motivated by prejudice towards a person's race or disability.

"Police and prosecutors take such offences very seriously and will continue to do all we can to bring those who persist in committing them to justice."
