Crowds of people gathered in Buñol, Spain on Wednesday, for the start of the world's biggest food fight. This year marks the 70th edition of the strange tradition, which is said to have originated as an accidental food fight between two young boys in 1945.
Thousands converge on the city's streets each year, and pelt each other with ripe, squashed tomatoes in an hour-long battle. Around 145,000kgs of tomatoes are thrown during the festival, which leaves revellers covered in red pulp.
Once free to participants, the mayor of Buñol imposed a €10 entry fee in 2012 to help mitigate the costs of tomatoes and policing.
This year, the town launched plans for the Tomatina race, its first ever tomato-based obstacle course.
