It was today revealed that Classic Rock Magazine have added British rockers Thunder to the nominations shortlist for ‘Band Of The Year’ for this year’s Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards. The winners of this category – and all other categories – will be announced at the gala ceremony, taking place Monday 2 November in London.
This unprecedented gesture comes after Awards organisers attended Thunder’s last ever gig at the Hammersmith Apollo (their last ever live appearance in the UK will be at Sonisphere Festival next month), where the fans reaction was so overwhelming it was felt that to bestow the honour of being nominated for ‘Band Of The Year’, competing against giants like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Kings Of Leon, Faith No More and Metallica, would form the perfect tribute to Thunder’s final year on the scene.
“After witnessing Thunder’s final shows, the Classic Rock staff decided that it was, quite frankly, nuts that the band weren’t nominated as Band Of The Year” commented Classic Rock’s Editor-In-Chief Scott Rowley. ”We put together the short-list before the Thunder dates, but the power of the band and the reaction of the fans meant that we had to reconsider. And this is rock’n’roll after all: rules are meant to be broken.”
Danny Bowes from Thunder added, “To be nominated alongside the other bands is a serious buzz. We can’t hope to compete against them of course, because they’re all famous, but it’s nice nonetheless. We’ll be gone by August 2nd, so if the impossible happened and we won, it would be a bit like a posthumous award, so we may have to kill Harry to justify it…”
The nominations for the Classic Rock Roll of Honour 2009 were announced last month at a launch event in London. Voting on the shortlists is now open, please see Classic Rock magazine or visit their website.
