Sparklehorse singer-songwriter Mark Linkous has committed suicide, according to the star's family.

The U.S. musician, who is thought to have been aged in his 40s, died on Saturday. No details about Linkous' death have been released, but his relatives have issued a statement claiming he took his own life.

The statement reads, "It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There's a heaven and there’s a star for you."

Linkous collaborated with Gnarls Barkley star Danger Mouse and film director David Lynch on 2009 album Dark Night of the Soul and previously supported Radiohead on tour. No further details were available as we went to press.
