Heavy rockers Metallica’s Tuesday night show in Lima, Peru has been billed as the biggest concert in the nation's history by local media.
Fans started queueing for the best standing room at the weekend and more than 50,000 people are expected to cram into the University of San Marcos Stadium for the show.
University authorities suspended all activities on Tuesday to make sure final arrangements for the concert could be carried out smoothly, and gates were opened at noon - hours before the band was due to hit the stage.
The show is the first of a South American tour, which will feature concerts in Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina and Brazil.
