Coldplay have settled their legal spat with guitar great Joe Satriani , who accused the Brits of stealing "substantial" segments of his song If I Could Fly.

The two parties have reportedly agreed a legal settlement and the guitarist's copyright infringement lawsuit has been dismissed. Coldplay will not be required to admit to any wrongdoing.

Satriani filed suit against Chris Martin and his band and their record label bosses in December, claiming their hit Viva La Vida featured "substantial, original portions" of his 2004 track.

He told website MusicRadar he was very upset when he first heard the track, explaining, "I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much... Almost immediately, from the minute their song came out, my e-mail box flooded with people going, 'Have you heard this song by Coldplay? They ripped you off, man.'"

The members of Coldplay have always denied the allegations, insisting they did nothing wrong. A statement from the Brits read, "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him."

Both acts are refusing to comment about the settlement.
