Rating: 3.5/5
Alison Moyet is a true music icon and she returns this week with her brand new single When I Was Your Girl - the first track to be lifted off her forthcoming album The Minutes.
Her last musical outing Changeling was a bit of an experimental track but this new single sees her return to more of a traditional sound.
When I Was Your Girl is a track on a grand scale that shows off Moyet’s great voice - the lower end of her vocal really does have a bewitching power to it.
There is some great juxtaposition on this track as the verses are quiet before the chorus bursts into life and drives the track forward.
This is a very reflective song that is moving as well as powerful and it is great to see Moyet back to her best.
But When I Was Your Girl is not all about Moyet’s vocal as there is some wonderful instrumentation as a powerful orchestra really does help bring this track to life.
Moyet has experimented a lot with her sound in recent years and the new album is set to see her continue that trend as she returns to her electronic roots.
But When I Was Your Girl is a powerful pop song that is a great introduction to the rest of the album.
