City Of Ashes formed back in 2009 but this week sees them finally release their debut EP Then There Was A Hand In The Darkness - and they are a band to watch out for over the next twelve months.
Over the past couple of years the band has been whipping up a storm and honing their craft on the life circuit and they have picked up quite a following in the process.
Falling Star is the kicks off the EP and if you are coming to their music for the first time then this is the perfect introduction to the four piece.
The soaring guitars really elevate the track while the powerful drums drive this forward and together they give this track a real tempo and energy.
Falling Star allows front man Orion Powell’s vocals to shine as he shows off the power in his voice in the chorus.
He shows off a very different side to his vocal in Beggars & Thieves but I have to admit that the screaming part at the beginning of the track really doesn’t do it for me.
But once he has got that out of the way his vocal is back on top form while there are some great riffs throughout.
The Highest Point Of Living is a bit of a slow burner and shows a more earnest and emotional side to the band.
This is a fantastic contrast to the rest of the tracks on this EP and it shows that the band have a real versatility.
This is a track that really takes advantage of Powell’s fantastic vocal as he pours his heart and his soul into this song - the emotion just hits you with every word that he sings.
A Calm Like Lethargy sees the EP close with a bang as this perhaps the heaviest track on the EP - once again showing the band’s versatility.
City Of Ashes have delivered a collection of tracks that really show off many sides to them as a band and as musicians and 2013 could be a very exciting year for them.
I can’t wait to hear a full album.
