Pop-rock superstars blink-182 have returned after a long hiatus, kick-starting the next stage of their career with new track 'Up All Night'.
Taken from Neighborhood - the upcoming, hugely anticipated follow-up to 2003's self-titled album - the song shows a progression in blink-182's sound.
Musical progression is always a good thing for a band, as it can prevent them from becoming stale.
However, blink-182 have been away as a band for eight years. It's doubtful that fans would've minded their new single showing some of the humour and pop-punk energy of their best known material.
As it stands, 'Up All Night' is a heavy track seemingly influenced by Tom DeLonge's time in Angels and Airwaves and Box Car Racer (alongside Travis Barker).
Initially it's a shock, but the verse manages to make this clearly a blink-182 track, despite the electronic influences.
The chorus is big enough that this should be a hit for the band.
Although an album completely in this direction could alienate a lot of old-school blink-182 fans, it sounds familiar enough to keep people excited for Neighborhood.
Having had such a long time apart, and with diverse side-projects, no-one can expect the band to sound the same.
After a few listens, 'Up All Night' does just enough to tread the line between musical progression and a departure from their roots.
