I can’t express how much I love this band; can’t get enough of them!
Here at Female First we have always been a fan of Robbie Boyd's infectious folk melodies.
Previously releasing two EP’s under the name of The Robbie Boyd Band, Robbie is now back with his EP Painted Sky under the name of Robbie Boyd.
Robbie originally started busking on the streets of London and has definitely come a long way since then. He has been capturing audiences across the UK recently with his distinctive sound and has earned national recognition by performing on ITV’S This Morning show and he was also invited to perform on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
His band made it to the top twenty of MTV’s Brand New Unsigned for this year and they have been lucky enough to tour to promote their music in Argentina, Italy, France and the UK.
There have been numerous critiques of the band and their releases and Hattie Pearson from Xfm says ‘I can’t express how much I love this band; can’t get enough of them!’
Simon Cowell from Syco said ‘I really like the style of singing and the tone of his voice’ and Tom Robinson from BBC 6 Music praised him by saying ‘Robbie has built up an enviable online following Ed Sheeran-style through his canny use of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter - while the quality of his song writing has impressed industry heavyweights such as Sir Tim Rice. What's not to like?’
My overall opinion of the EP is that 'His feel good folk songs are highly addictive, the EP is full of cheerful melodies, catchy choruses and noteworthy lyrics with an added dose of sunny disposition.'
The opening song is titled I Want You to Stay, with trumpets and soulful backing vocals this song is sickly sweet but perfect to listen to during the summer months. Everybody needs a little sunshine in their lives and that is exactly what this entire EP brings.
Before It Falls Apart is the next track on the EP and unsurprisingly it is another upbeat track with an A cappella intro and a real live band feel.
Oh Alaska is a beautiful track; the tempo slows the down for this one track and I really loved the stripped back sound, it was my favourite song on the EP. Alaska also has a slightly nostalgic feel to it, the bass line holds the song together perfectly and the hook in the chorus makes it worthy of constant repeats.
Robbie reveals his darker side in the heartbreak finale, Red Queen. Those who find his sweet side slightly nauseating will prefer this track but I personally love both sides to his sound. The lyrics have vigour and subtle angry undertones which is a nice contrast with the other tracks.
Drenched in sunny nostalgia, Robbie Boyd’s EP Painted Sky is a magnificent example of how a simple song can create a domino effect. Simplicity is the key to a successful song, with Bob-Marley-type lyrics and a touch of Folk, Robbie Boyd has the potential to be one of the more popular Folk artists on the charts.
Folk music is often a lost art and loses out to the commercial pop invested tunes that make it to the number one spot on the charts. But with Robbie’s charming song writing and distinctive vocals combined with colourful arrangements and nostalgic harmonies, I’m sure he will have no problem reaching other fans of other genres with his music.
Robbie Boyd’s new EP entitled Painted Sky is out now!
