Natalie Maines - Mother

Artist: Natalie Maines

Album: Mother

OUT NOW

Rating: 4/5

Natalie Maines shot to fame as one of the Dixie Chicks and now she is striking out on her own with her debut solo album Mother.

The album is a mix of covers as well as original tracks as Maines takes her music in a different direction and allows her to find her own sound and voice.

Maines really shines on this record as she shows that she is not afraid to take on well known tracks and makes them her own while introducing some fantastic original songs.

She covers Without You by Eddie Vedder on the opening track on the record as she mixes elements of pop and rock to deliver a great version of this well known song.

The rockier edge really suits her vocal and she is really able to let loose and show off her full and very powerful range.

She tackles the idea of the importance of strong relationships a couple of times on this track with Without You and Come Cryin’ To Me.

But one of the major stand out tracks on the album comes in the form of Mother as Maines puts her own stamp on the Pink Floyd track.

The first half of the track is kept very simple as Maines’ beautiful vocal is supported by an acoustic guitar - but it does pick up pace as the electric guitars kick in to give the track extra punch.

It is a tortured ballad in places but the second half of the track really does se it soar and it is one song on this album that you will not be able to forget.

Free Life and Lover You Should’ve Come Over are two other great covers and Maines really has established herself as a major solo star.

Mother is one of those terrific debut albums and it is great to Maines taking on a new sound and a new direction and it really has allowed her to shine.
