I have heard some pretty unusual types of music but Sarah John’s Music Party has just been pushed to the top of that list. The EP is a collection of eccentric anti-folk blues stripped back to the bare minimum.
Her music is raw, laid-back, honest and to-the-point, it isn’t to everyone’s taste and she will definitely be placed in the marmite category. I’m still not sure if I have warmed to her music just yet. Maybe it is a little too laidback for me, it’s probably because I prefer Indie or Pop music which is far from what this is.
The opening track Greenbud has an ethereal feel to it, Sarah's gentle tones dance over minimal acoustic guitar and sparse, primal drum beats.
The second track is entitled Blossom Tree which is individual in its own psychedelic way. With touches of reverb and what sounds like bongo drums this track is probably the furthest a song can be to be classed as commercial.
Holding Me is chilling and distant musically, it definitely wasn’t my type of song at all. It reminded me of a lullaby and although I am in favour of soft music this track bored me a little.
The last track on the EP is Leave You Alone begins with a selection of drum beats and more soft vocals, the song is beautiful but the lyrics are not memorable and I would easily forget the melody too.
You can see strong spiritual influences in her music, the EP is a mixture of quirky loops, finger picking guitar and childlike vocals, Sarah Johns is one of those artists that is undeniably unique.
Her EP might not be to my eclectic taste but it definitely proves that it is still possible to express individuality through music.
