Primal Scream are due to release their 10th album ‘More Light’ on 13th May. After being in the music industry for more than two decades they have a long list of singles and a magnificent collection of albums to follow suit.
The album boasts a 13-track collection of new songs written by Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes along with producer, David Holmes. The album features Gillespie as the lead vocalist and Andrew Innes who plays guitar. To complete the band are Martin Duffy who plays the keyboard, Simone Butler who is on bass and Darrin Mooney who plays the drums.
2013 kicks off the album with an intriguing instrumental of a shrieking saxophone which will no doubt grasp your attention. An array of instruments continues to lead throughout the song with Gillespie carrying the song with the vocals. The song is an ambitious 9 minutes long with much of the time focused on an exceptional guitar solo.
The second track on the album begins a little slower, only to emphasise the title River of Pain. The eerie vocals and chilling instruments make for a dark track but are a suitable fit for the vibe of the band.
Elimination Blues is a laid-back, mellow track conveying an electric sound that gets the song in motion. The track features guest vocals from the Lead Singer of the band Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant. The combination of Plant and Gillespie works exceptionally well as they both complement one another and makes it easy to listen too.
Gillespie says of the new album: “I wanted to convey coming out of a dark time and into a good one…We always knew it wasn’t going to be a straight ahead, balls to the wall, high energy rock ‘n’ roll, two guitars, bass and drum record.”
If you are a follower of Primal Scream then this album is not to be missed. It’s everything that you expect to hear from them, if not more.
The album is layered, sophisticated and sees electronic music meets rock music.
