Over the last couple of years Doldrums have released a handful of EPs that have all been well received and this week they are back with their debut album Lesser Evil.
Fans of Doldrums aka Airick Woodhead will know that the artist has a very eclectic sound and that continues with this new collection of tracks.
The album kicks off with a rather useless intro - I really wish artists would just adding this one minute of faff and just get on with the record - once that is out of the way Anomaly is the first track on the album.
There is something quite Bjorkesque about Anomaly but it really is quite a dark, brooding and eerie track - it really is the perfect opener to this record.
The vocal as a real ethereal quality to it and that contrasts fantastically with the dark feel that is created by the backing music.
She Is The Wave has a real psychedelic element to it as the vocal plays second fiddle to the backing music and sounds being created by Woodhead - have to admit really not a fan of this track.
Holographic Sand Castles and Singularity Acid Face and Lesser Evil kick off the second half of the album and there is almost a claming effect created by these tracks.
Woodhead brings down the pace and the noise and allows the listener to catch their breath and process what they have heard so far.
And then we are off again with Lesser Evil and the pulsating beat and psychedelic elements are back in force.
Lesser Evil is an album that is a much about the backing music as it is about the vocal and Doldrums really has delivered an incredibly interesting sounding album - there will be very few record that sound like this released this year.
However this is a record that will not be for everyone and while I can appreciate what Doldrums is trying to do here this is an album that is really not for me.
