Rodina are a Leeds based duo of singer Aoife Hearty and songwriter Joe Tatton and they release their new album Rodina And The Wolf this week.
The duo grabbed everyone’s attention with their Silver Mines EP and now they are back with a second album.
Silver Mines is the opening track on the record and it a bit of a slower burner as it build gradually and it is not until the second minute that the vocals kick in.
Aoife Hearty has an incredibly beautiful and emotive voice that adds atmosphere to this opening song and it more than holds its own against the heavier backing music.
Back Down starts as quite a quiet and chilled out track with Hearty’s haunting vocal ringing out. Even though a dub bass does kick in this still has a very haunting feel to it.
There is a change of sound again on What Are You Trying To Do? As there is more of a menacing feel to the entire track.
The vocal is allowed to take centre stage at the beginning of the track and Hearty gives a very seductive vocal performance - it is completely different to the opening two tracks.
This is perhaps one of the more mainstream and radio friendly tracks that are on this album as pop and dance elements are mixed together really effectively.
This is an eclectic sounding album as there are elements of trip hop, jazz and dance all mixed in together - throw in the haunting vocals of Hearty and you have a very interesting sounding record.
It is great to see that Rodina is a band that is not afraid to experiment with their sound as they move from pop to more of a haunting and chilling sound.
Rodina And The Wolf is the perfect blend and balance between vocal and instrumental as one is just as important as the other.
It is refreshing to hear an album where the soundscape is constantly changing but it will not be to everyone’s taste.
