Mike Doughty is back with his new album The Question Jar Show, a double disk live album that was recorded during a recent tour.
The album mixes live performances from Doughty with his interaction with the audience and this is the musician at his very best.
Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well is the opening track on the album and it immediately sets the tone for the music you are going to get throughout this record - stripped back and acoustic takes on his most well known tracks.
Doughty’s vocals are almost mesmerising on Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well and the rich low tone is brought to life even further by the guitars and strings that also play on this track - the two just compliment each other so wonderfully.
This is an incredibly intimate record as Doughty is well and truly laid bare as a musician because of the style he has chosen to deliver these tracks.
He sings all of his best known tracks such as Busting Up a Starbucks and 27 Jennifers and they are such intense performances that Doughty elevates these tracks to true greatness.
But it’s not all about the music as Doughty shows off the rapport that he so famously has with his audiences as he answers a whole of host of questions such as ‘Would you rather play twister with Dick Chaney or punch a kitten in the face?’
With these little interludes Doughy shows that he is quite the comedian as he banters well with an appreciative audience as well as his fellow musician Andrew ‘Scrap’ Livingston.
The Question Jar Show shows off Doughty as an incredibly brave performer and this live album works so well it really is one of the best that I have heard in a long while.
This singer- songwriter has added an extra level of depth to all of the tracks just in the way that he has delivered them - folk and blues have never sounded so good!!
