Artist: I Am Harlequin
Album: Craze EP
OUT NOW
Rating: 4/5
I Am Harlequin aka Anne Freier is back with her brand new EP Craze as she once again shows of her individual and experimental style.
It has already been a great year for the artist with support from many of the big radio stations as well as having her music appear on TV show Skins.
I Am Harlequin comes from an electric music background and this really shows in the title track Craze, which is an amalgamation of a whole host of sound.
There is an electric beat at the beginning of the track but that slows to be a piano driven song about half way through while the vocal really will make you think of Kate Bush.
She changes the sound with Something Else as the thick baseline kicks in immediately and it is perhaps a little more mainstream than the opening track.
This track shows off her unique vocals and this is supported by off kilter arrangements, which feature throughout, and it works so incredibly well.
There is an infusion of classical elements with Because He Loves Them Both as the strings kick in right for the beginning.
There is a staccato element that is inserted throughout the track and the abrupt and sharp vocals and instrumentation works really well and gives this track real texture.
And she changes the sound and the pace again with Wild One, the final track on the EP as this is a stripped back piano driven song.
This is a track where her vocal well and truly takes centre stage as her voice and the power of her song-writing can be enjoyed without being distracted by what is going on in the background.
This is an EP that will not be for everyone but it is a bold record that is powerful as well as emotionally engaging.
I Am Harlequin writes music that is difficult to forget as her unorthodox style really does get under you skin and surprises at every turn.
