Rating: 4/5
Don Felder is back as a solo artist this week with his new record Road To Forever - his first records since 1983.
This is an incredibly reflective record for Felder as he sings about life, love, loss as well as redemption and it shows that he as great a song-writer as ever.
Fall From The Grace of Love is the opening track on the album what is a great rock ballad and shows that Felder is also on top form vocally.
And it is not all about ballads on this album as Girls In Black is a great rock track that shows off a cheekier side to Felder.
You Don’t Have Me is one of the highlights on this record as the guitar playing on this song really is out of this world.
Felder’s vocals are deep and rich and they really do sound fantastic - thrown in a great vocal arrangement and you have a bit of a rock classic.
As well as sounding fantastic vocally Felder also produces some great work on the guitar as he delivers some great licks on Wash Away while tracks like Girls In Black have demonstrate some good slide work.
And while this is a solo album from Felder you can hear influences from The Eagles in his music and that is no more apparent than in Life’s Lullaby.
This is a beautiful ballad and it could so easily have been a track that Felder and Glenn Frey could have written together.
Life’s Lullaby is one of the most stripped back tracks on the album as Felder’s vocals is supported beautifully by the piano and some strings.
Road To Forever is a triumphant return for Don Felder as he has delivered a collection of songs that show off all side of him as a musician.
Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait another twenty years for his next record.
