It has been eight years since Aerosmith’s last studio album but they are back this week with their fifteenth album Music From Another Dimension.
Luv XXX is the opening track on the record and if you can overlook the awful talking intro to the song this is a great rock tune.
The guitars really drive the track forward and the guitar riff by Joe Perry is particularly great - and you can almost overlook the bizarre lyrics.
Steven Tyler singing “Hello, hello, hello / Come on, come on, come over / Hello, hello, hello / Until this storm blows over.” isn’t exactly the rocker at his best.
The album really does get going with Oh Yeah as the band nod back to the sound of earlier records.
Can’t Stop Loving You is one of the best tracks on the album as Aerosmith teams up with Carrie Underwood.
The track is one of the emotional on the album and it pours out through Tyler’s vocal - he really is on good form on this song.
This ballad as that heart-wrenching feel that they brought us with I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing and the band really show that they still have it.
But Tyler is not on top form vocally all the way through this record as the likes of Legendary Child and What Could Have Been show the shortcomings of his voice - it is particularly shame on the latter as it is a great track.
The major problem with Music From Another Dimension is that the band has showed little progression from their great records of the eighties - that have tried to recapture this success rather than to try something different or new.
There is a real excitement around this record as it has taken so long for the band to record and release it - if we are being honest it is a miracle that it has been released at all - but it doesn’t quite live up the hype.
There are some great moments, Can’t Stop Loving You being a particular highlight, but they are unable to sustain it for the full fifteen tracks.
Street Jesus is perhaps the most contemporary track on this new record and it is interesting to see Aerosmith take their sound down a bit of a new track - it would have been great to see them be so brave throughout the entire record.
But this not an album that is to be completely dismissed as the band still have a knack for writing and creating catchy music and lyrics and there are moments of freshness.
But longstanding fans of the band may be left disappointed as it doesn’t quite hit the dizzy heights that perhaps were expected.
